Piano Tuning

Amadeus Piano Tuning

Traditionally, The art of Piano Tuning is only done by ear, only.

Based on one note, the A at frequency 440HZ. This pitch is something most tuners just carry around with them all day long. For reference, the use of a tuning fork is allowed to help make the pitch as close to perfect as possible.

Piano Tuning is the maintenance of piano string tension. The piano was designed to withstand and sustain a certain pressure from the strings, which even in smaller pianos is greater than 60,000 lbs whether you play or not. When humidity changes, the wood reacts to the change, absorbing or losing moisture. This causes a change in pressure in the strings and that is why your piano goes out of tune more when you start heating your home in the fall, and again when you stop heating your home in the spring.

Piano Tuning Acoustic pianos have natural imperfections in the wood and proportion. Sound properties are manipulated by the tuning, not just the pitch of the string. Within a pitch, there is always a little flexibility. -A piano tuned using a computer does not sound alive. The finest sound properties of any piano are brought out Only by professional ear tuning and voicing.

We don't charge to fix sticking keys and we never use lubricants in your piano. Spraying teflon or other lubricants will damage wood and felt in the long term, hardening and separating natural fibers. It is a temporary solution. The piano mechanism is designed to be lubricant-free and when properly regulated, should work without squeaking or sticking. All these problems are fixed by adjusting the action mechanism.

Piano Voicing - Voicing is the adjustment of the tone quality. Hammers are generally flexible in the type of tone that they are able to produce. It's true that different brands of piano hammers cater to various tastes and applications, as well as playing different styles of music. For example, the German Abel Hammer was always a better choice for a heavy heamer that gives a broad and deep tone; Renner Blue hammers were always top of the line for light and sensitive, precise tone. The hammer felt can be adjusted to be brighter or softer to compensate for acousical imperfections in the instrument and to ensure a smooth transition between registers. "Doping"or treating with lacquers or hammer treating liquids is a big no-no, as there is no way back from that technique. Very often over-done by many semi-amateur technicians in an attempt to make the piano tone brighter. Not a good option and if you are not prepared to change your piano hammers, ask your technician not to implement that kind of technique.

Piano action regulation must be performed at least every two years on any piano to maintain the right touch and prolong the life of the piano action.

Basic Piano Tuning Schedule

In order to keep proper string tension, every piano must be tuned at least twice per year, if moderately used.  For heavy or professional use more frequent service is required.  In concert halls and recording studios, the piano is typically tuned before each performance.  The tuning schedule should coincide with the heating cycle of the room in which the piano is located.  After the beginning of a heating cycle, in the fall, allow the piano to acclimate to the new humidity level for two to three weeks and then have it tuned.  Likewise, after the end of a heating cycle, in the spring, wait two to three weeks after the heat has been turned off and then have it tuned.

In a grand piano and any upright piano, string tension is tens of thousands of pounds.  If you let the piano go out of tune for a long time, the string tension fluctuates by thousands of pounds with each passing season, causing major warping and cracking in the hardwoods, soundboard and bridges.

If your piano has not been tuned in a long time (more than a couple years), one piano tuning may not bring your piano back into concert pitch.  Also, the piano may not hold the tuning as long as a regularly-maintained piano would.  This is because Piano strings are designed to be kept under a certain amount of pressure and when this pressure is not maintained and suddenly applied, the piano strings will stretch out and go back approximately half way from the original position.   A second and sometimes third and fourth tuning may be required to bring the strings to a stable point, and the piano will eventually hold the tuning.  The consecutive piano tunings may be done in one sitting, or can be spread out over a period of a few weeks to a couple months.  Our experienced piano technicians will be able to advise the best method, depending on the current condition of your piano and the stability of the climate around the piano.
